     The Solar Shield's that I found in the desert were all linked wirelessly into a circuit that shielded the lab boss, Luminus. I wasn't able to fight Luminus properly until these defensive shields were destroyed. Functionally, the shields don't attack, but can repel any medium to long range projectile attack. There one weakness is their inability to defend themselves at very close ranges. This, however, meant that the Solar Shields were always heavily guarded. I thought their cube shaped shields were a nice nod to their lab boss (Luminus was, essentially a giant cube).
